Event Description

Come together with regional and national occupational health professionals for a chance to learn from leading experts about this growing crisis and network with others in sunny southern California!

Day 1 of our symposium will consist of a full day of presentations covering health effects from wildfire smoke, past and ongoing NIOSH research on wildland firefighters, regulations surrounding worker protection from wildfire smoke, and research on the impact of climate change on wildfires. Keynote speakers include nationally and internationally recognized experts, Dr. John Balmes from University of California San Francisco on the new California mandate that employers provide respirators for outdoor workers during wildfires as well as other relevant regulations and Dr. Jefferey Burgess from University of Arizona on firefighter health effects and the Fire Fighter Cancer Cohort Study and its recent WUI extension.

Day 2 of our symposium will be a morning session continuing on the theme of wildfires with panels and speakers on the topics of biomonitoring as it pertains to wildfires from the California Department of Public Health Biomonitoring program and wildfire research and computer modeling. Industrial Hygiene specialist Michelle Rosales will speak on exposure monitoring after wildfires and assessing health risks from wildfire-related property damage. Ms. Rosales is one of the primary authors of “Technical Guide for Wildfire Impact Assessments for the OEHS Professional 2018”.
